Princess Vibes’ Sectioned Vibes Part II: Day 9

Advocating for Better Mental Healthcare: Your Rights under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act

Introduction:

In the pursuit of mental healthcare, it’s essential to recognise your rights and the actions you can take if you are not satisfied with the level of care you receive. Under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act, patients have specific rights, and one of those rights is the ability to voice concerns and complaints regarding their care. In this post, we’ll delve into the process of addressing grievances, the role of PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service), and the importance of maintaining sanitary conditions within healthcare facilities.

Your Rights under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act:

Section 2 of the Mental Health Act allows for the assessment and treatment of individuals with severe mental health issues. However, it’s crucial to understand that being detained under this section does not deprive you of your rights. One of the most vital rights you retain is the right to be treated with respect, dignity, and receive the best possible care.

Complaining about the Quality of Care:

If you find yourself dissatisfied with the care you’re receiving under Section 2, it’s crucial to voice your concerns. Your complaints may range from the quality of treatment to the conditions of the facility itself. Remember, your well-being matters, and your feedback can help improve the system for you and future patients.

The Role of PALS:

Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) are invaluable resources in the healthcare system. PALS exists to support patients in expressing their concerns and resolving issues with their care. They act as a bridge between patients and healthcare providers, helping to find solutions and ensuring that your voice is heard. When unhappy with your care, consider reaching out to your local PALS office for assistance.

The Unsanitary Conditions: A Case in Point

Recently, I had a personal experience that highlighted the importance of maintaining sanitary conditions within healthcare facilities. I was placed in Joshua Ward, a facility that left much to be desired in terms of cleanliness and overall hygiene. My room was not just noisy; it was filthy. There were unsettling signs of neglect, including snot on the walls and mouse excrement down the side of the bed.

Unsanitary conditions like these pose serious health risks to patients. It’s not just about discomfort but a potential hazard to your well-being. Mice can carry diseases, and their presence in a healthcare setting is unacceptable. Poor hygiene can lead to infections, complications, and an overall deterioration of one’s mental health.

Government Policies and Underfunding:

The deplorable conditions in facilities like Joshua Ward shed light on a broader issue plaguing our healthcare system – the catastrophic effects of Tory government policies and underfunding on the NHS. Years of budget cuts and neglect have left our healthcare infrastructure struggling to provide adequate care to those who need it most.

Underfunding not only affects the physical aspects of healthcare, such as facility maintenance but also impacts staffing levels and the availability of essential resources. This shortage can result in overworked staff, reduced quality of care, and, in extreme cases, compromised patient safety.

We cannot underestimate the importance of adequately funding and supporting our healthcare system. It’s a matter of public health and individual well-being. As patients and advocates, we must demand better from our elected officials, ensuring that the mental healthcare system is properly equipped to deliver the care we deserve.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, if you find yourself unhappy with the level of care you’ve received under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act, remember that you have rights and avenues for recourse. PALS is there to support you, and your voice matters. Additionally, the state of healthcare facilities, like Joshua Ward, illustrates the urgent need for increased funding and better government policies to ensure the health and well-being of patients.

We must advocate not only for ourselves but for the countless others who rely on our healthcare system. Together, we can work towards a future where mental healthcare is not only accessible but delivered with the utmost care, respect, and sanitation standards. Our well-being depends on it, and our voices can drive the change needed to make it happen.

Rest assured, it wasn’t all bad on Joshua Ward, we met some wonderful people from from both the staff and the patients and much to our delight we were gifted a magical new emotional support animal from one of our wonderful radical faerie friends!

Behold “Joshua Ward” our new pet/ campaign mascot an adorable pig-unicorn hybrid which we named after the first psychiatric ward we have attended during this section under the mental health act, while Giselle can never be replaced, we are growing to love our new soft cuddly creature as he is big enough to hug, should our 5 year old inner child need some comfort during our stay in Hospital!

Our spirits were lifted no end when our faerie friends came to visit, so we hope to see them and others again soon! 🥳🧚🏻

Thriving in Our New Home on Brett Ward

After our experiences on Joshua Ward, the transition to Brett Ward was a welcome change. Brett Ward offers several improvements that have positively impacted our mental health journey. Notably, it provides a quieter environment that’s conducive to recovery and healing. The addition of stunning murals on the walls has injected life and positivity into our surroundings, creating an uplifting atmosphere.

It’s important to acknowledge that Brett Ward lacks an on-site gym facility. However, we’ve embraced this challenge by finding creative ways to stay active within the confines of our room. Our determination to prioritise both mental and physical health remains unwavering.

A significant benefit of our new situation is the flexibility to return to Joshua Ward a few days a week to utilize their gym. This arrangement allows us to maintain our fitness routines we began with the wonderful gym instructor and stay committed to our health goals and the #OperationSelfCareIsSexy showcasing our adaptability in making the most of available resources.

Our journey has been a rollercoaster, marked by challenges and victories. Yet, our dedication to advocating for enhanced mental healthcare and improving conditions for all patients remains steadfast.

In summary, our transition to Brett Ward has represented a step towards improvement compared to our experiences on Joshua Ward. We are resolute in maximizing our current circumstances and will continue using our voices to push for systemic enhancements in mental healthcare.

Remember, your voice is influential as well. Together, we can transform the mental healthcare system to prioritize patient well-being, cleanliness, and accessibility. Let’s persist in advocating for change and supporting one another on the path to a brighter, healthier future.

Our highlight of day 9 was our wonderful friend from our teenage years around 20 years ago came to visit us, which definitely boosted our morale too, thanks buddy, you know who you are and yesterday when we had some essential supplies delivered by some fabulous faeries to boost our morale too, including some food quality razors which are a vast improvement on the ones the hospital supplied which are akin to shaving with a piece of glass, so thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to come and see us, we really appreciate it! 🥳🧚🏻✅

Together, we possess the power to initiate the transformative change we envision for our world. Once we’ve triumphed over our own battles, our focus will shift towards realizing the positive change revolution in U.K. Mental Healthcare—an objective we wholeheartedly embraced back in 2018 when this campaign started as “Chan-Dog’s VibeVan” which subsequently went on to win an award from Deliveroo in Winter 2020.
